I moved to Brisbane more than 2 years ago. Prior to moving to Brisbane, I do not cook regularly or cook to feed myself. Mum or dad did all the cooking at home. Having a keen interest, I picked up cooking in Brisbane (I am still learning). Sometimes I try new and difficult recipes, other times I just mix, use and experiment with the ingredients and seasonings that I have in my fridge/pantry. Sometimes they turn out good, sometimes not that great, but Quop (my husband) ate them anyway :p.
I was chatting with a student from my hometown one day and he told me (like many other international students) that he cannot cook. His housemate usually cooks for him but he is leaving Brisbane soon. Such is the plight of many international students - unable to cook for themselves. Many end up eating convenient, unhealthy processed food or paying extra money to eat out.
This blog targets asian international students (who usually live with their parents prior to travelling overseas for their studies) and aims to provide information / recipes / tips, etc for the amateur cook, who cooks to survive. The recipes are quick, easy and preferably inexpensive, are intended to be a healthier alternative to eating processed food. I have also included some intermediate recipes for the more adventurous or for you to attempt something a bit more than easy for the special occasion. You will find asian food recipes and also some easy-to-cook "aussie" food recipes.
There are other food blogs and websites that I recommend and have listed on the left column of this page. If you have a tried and tested recipe, a cooking / storing food / freezing tip, any tips relating to food and diet and are wiiling to share, or any other comments, please feel free to email me (photos are welcome too!) at thehungrystudentcooks@gmail.com.
